Ending oil industry sponsorship of the arts

'Today, at 11.30am, we began a surprise musical protest outside Glasgow’s Theatre Royal to challenge BP’s sponsorship of the Scottish Ballet. Around 50 performers and supporters took part in an action led jointly by BP or not BP? and Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir.

We are organisations and athletes that are deeply concerned about the climate breakdown we are starting to see around the world. We recognise the need to act urgently to phase out fossil fuels in order to avoid the worst scenarios set out by scientists in the recent IPCC report.

'At the opening night of WA Ballet’s performance of Dracula, two dancers showed that Woodside Energy’s Scarborough gas would suck the life from future generations. We call on WA Ballet to end their relationship with climate and cultural heritage destroying Woodside because of their inability to drop their addiction to fossil fuels.'

Since the sponsorship deal was announced back in April, a major backlash has unfolded with scientists, youth climate activists, exhibition contributors and the wider public speaking out through protests, petitions and a youth-led boycott of the exhibition.
